    Database Connection Error: Oracle

    Hi!

First i would like to say that Modelright seems like an exelent tool, and after watching the demo-video i was really excited to give it a try it in one of our projects!

Sorry to say, but im now about to give up on connecting my remote Oracle 9i Database to Modelright 3 for Oracle.

I´ve tried several versions ov oci.dll (and Oracle clients) including the one posted under files at this site without any results.

I still get the message "Database Connection Error:" regardless of driver-version and my tnsnames.ora settings.

Using the commandpromt, sqlplus and tnsping works flawless so the problem shouldn´t be related to the driver or tnsname?

Is there any way of getting more detailed information about the problems with my connection besides this generic "Database Connection Error: " message?

Google didn´t result in any good answeres, anyone heard about this problem before?

    Regards /Jocke

    Hi Jocke,

Sorry to hear about your issue... if you indeed are using Oracle to connect to your database then you should get an ORA- error message following the "Database connection error:" message. What is it?

     Thanks.

    Re: Database Connection Error: Oracle

And just to be sure... since you mentioned "driver" your in post, I hope that you use the native Oracle connection and not ODBC. That is, you will need to pick Oracle 8i, 9i, 10g or 11g from the database type list box.

If you are trying to use ODBC (via Community edition) to reverse enggineer from Oracle, then tnsnames.ora or oci.dll are of no use (directly) to ModelRight. You will need to create a proper ODBC database source, first.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Database Connection Error: Oracle

Thank you for your quick response! The problem is that i don´t get any ORA- error, it´s just "Database connection error: " and a ok-button, so it´s hard to tell what the problem relates to.

I´ve picked Oracle 9i in the Database Type, entered my username and password.

The drop-down menu doesn´t contain any items though, so iv'e entered the tns service name manually, also tried all kinds of connectionstrings (user/pass@ipadress:portnr, ipadr:portnr etc without any results or other error messages)

    Re: Database Connection Error: Oracle

Hmmm... Are you sure that you can run sqlplus from the box on which you run ModelRight?

If you do, then please type the same name and password as you do when using SQL*Plus and in the Server edit/list control type the name of the server as you use it with SQL*Plus (no port or anything like that). The Server list will be populate with all the servers that you've used in the past, so initially will be empty.

Now the fact that you do not get an ORA error it is very strange. Do you have any antivirus on your machine? If you do, can you please make sure that allows ModelRight to connect to outside world?

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Database Connection Error: Oracle

    hi,

I'm getting the same exact error. i was wondering if there were any fixes to this problem. This is a great tool, but I've been trying to connect to an ORACLE database without any success. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

    Re: Database Connection Error: Oracle

Can you please post a screenshot of the connection error? This is very unusual...

Do you use any other tool (Sql Plus, etc) to connect from that machine to your database?

BTW, you need Oracle Client installed on your machine (please download & install it from here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/index.html)  and a proper tnsnames.ora file (see an example here: http://www.orafaq.com/wiki/Tnsnames.ora).

    Re: Database Connection Error: Oracle

Thanks for the quick reply!                                                                                          The connection error is just a message box reading "Database Connection Error".             I don't have the client software installed, I thought you could connect without it. I'll download it and give it a go. Thanks!

    Re: Database Connection Error: Oracle

I've installed Oracle Client on my machine and was able to connect to the database through other tools but I am still getting the same error when i try to connect through ModelRight. It doesn't seem to matter what I enter in the Connection screen, I get the same error regardless. Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Mohamed

    Re: Database Connection Error: Oracle

Do you use SQL Plus? If you can connect to your database, from the same machine using a command like "sqlplus <user>/<password>@<server>" then all you have to do is to fill in <user>, <password> and <server> in the ModelRight connection dialog. BTW, if you have an anti-virus installed, you might need to add ModelRight to the allowed applications  to connect outside from your machine.

    Re: Database Connection Error: Oracle

I used SQL Plus and I connect from the command line just fine. I fill in the ModelRight connection dialog with the exact same information but i still get the same error.

    Re: Database Connection Error: Oracle

This is very unusual... Are you sure you do not have an antivirus blocking the ModelRight access? Also, ModelRight is using oci.dll library to connect to your database... if the Oracle client is properly installed then ModelRight should find it via the Windows $PATH.  Just in case.... can you please download oci.dll from here: https://www.modelright.com/files/default.aspx and install it in the "C:\Program Files\ModelRight\ModelRight 3" (where whatever the folder name is where you installed MR).

    Re: Database Connection Error: Oracle

There are no issues with my antivirus blocking ModelRight. I also already have oci.dll installed in the proper location. I hope there are still possible issues to resolve this. Its a great tool, but obviously without being to connect to the database will extremely limit its usage for me.

     Thanks,

    Mohamed

Cool... would be great - for other's benefit - to know what actually was the problem and what fixed it!
